About: I am a Full Professor at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Politehnica University Timișoara, Romania. I received my Ph.D. from Hasselt University, Belgium, in 2011 and joined Politehnica University Timișoara in 2012.

My academic career combines internationally recognized research, extensive collaboration, and sustained contributions to computer vision and image processing. Between 2015 and 2017, I was awarded an individual Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at the University of Girona, Spain, where I conducted research within VICOROB, a leading center in computer vision and underwater robotics.
My scientific contributions have been recognized through several distinctions. In 2020, I received the “Gheorghe Cartianu” Award from the Romanian Academy. Since 2020, I have also been included in the Stanford University–Elsevier ranking of the world’s top 2% of researchers. I have authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conference proceedings, and I contribute to the international research community as a co-organizer of the IEEE/CVF CVPR NTIRE Workshop.
My research lies at the intersection of image understanding, computational imaging, and visual perception. I develop perceptually grounded methods that enable machines to acquire, restore, and interpret visual information under challenging real-world conditions. A central objective of my work is to design reliable and explainable visual-processing approaches whose performance is aligned with human perception while extending beyond human capabilities in demanding computational tasks.
My current research interests include image enhancement and restoration, visual perception under adverse environmental conditions, underwater and low-light imaging, image dehazing, multimodal perception, and learning-based methods for robust visual understanding. These methods are particularly relevant to autonomous robotic systems, where reliable perception is essential for navigation, obstacle detection, scene understanding, and decision-making in complex and degraded visual environments.
